Chicken-Fried Steak & Gravy is a classic Southern dish made with a tenderized steak that is coated in a thick batter and fried until golden brown. It is typically served with a rich and flavorful gravy.
Ingredients:
- 1 pound cube steak
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 1 egg, beaten
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
Instructions:
- In a shallow dish, combine the salt and pepper.
- Dredge the cube steak in the flour mixture until well coated.
- In a separate shallow dish, whisk together the egg and milk.
- Dip the coated steak in the egg mixture, then dredge again in the flour mixture.
- Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Add the coated steak to the skillet and cook for 2-3 minutes per side, or until golden brown and cooked through.
- Remove the steak from the skillet and set aside.
- In the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Whisk in the flour until smooth.
- Gradually whisk in the beef broth until the gravy is smooth and thickened.
- Season with salt and pepper to taste.
- Return the steak to the skillet and cook for 1-2 minutes, or until heated through.
- Serve immediately with your favorite sides.
